His academic focus lies in fragile statehood, peacebuilding, causes of migration and flight, migration policy, governance and democracy support and development dynamics of non-democratic regimes. From 1992 until 2002 he focused on political developments in Russia. 2008 he became member of the Advisory Board on Crisis Prevention and Peacebuilding of the German government. From 2011 until 2018 he was co-chairman of the Advisory Board.

In the third decade of the 21st century, humanity is facing enormous challenges - ecological, political, social - with great potential for conflicts. Coping with them will only be possible in case we manage to think about security globally and do not accept peace or its lacking as fate but rather a creative mandate. Doing so requires places where intelligent, forward-looking discussions can be held openly. TDHJ can offer an excellent forum for this - fact-based, solution-oriented and respectful.
